The Power of Venting to God: Why We Should Take Our Burdens to Him
Proverbs 29:11 A fool vents all his feelings, but a wise man holds them back.
As someone who values open communication, I’ve always believed in expressing my feelings and addressing issues head-on.
But I had to learn the difference between being open with others and being open with God. It’s a lesson that took me a few tries to understand, but it has had a big impact on how I handle my emotions and frustrations.
I remember a time when I was feeling deeply frustrated with a family member. In a moment of weakness, I decided to vent my feelings to someone else. I convinced myself that by “getting things out in the open,” I would start fixing the problem. I thought being understood by someone would help relieve the pressure I felt.
At first, I got what I wanted. The person I vented to understood my frustration, but they quickly became angry on my behalf. What followed was a confrontation that turned into a huge argument.
Instead of solving anything, my venting only led to hurt feelings and higher levels of stress. In the end, nothing was resolved, and I was left worse off than before.
Looking back, I realized I should’ve vented to God.
Venting often leads us down one of two paths. On one path, our feelings are minimized or dismissed, leaving us feeling small, unheard, and unsatisfied. On the other, we receive empathy and understanding, but that can turn into regret when we realize we’ve overshared. Either way, venting to others rarely brings the relief or solution we’re hoping for.
Don’t get me wrong, support is important. Being open, seeking help, and refusing to let negative feelings fester is necessary. But sometimes we make the mistake of seeking understanding, acceptance, and validation from others instead of from God. We look for solutions from people who, like us, are limited in their ability to help. We turn to them for healing when we should be turning to God.
Venting to the Lord is different from venting to people. He won’t dismiss our concerns, and He already understands what we’re feeling. People can listen and support us, but God alone has the power to bring healing and give us what we need to move forward.
The truth is, no one can understand us the way our Creator does. When we bring our burdens to Him, we find peace, clarity, and strength.
So the next time you feel the urge to vent, turn to God. He knows what you’re going through, and He can provide the comfort and guidance you need.
Pour out your heart to Him, and let Him take care of the rest.
